Case Study:
Designing & Installing a Butterfly/Native Garden at
St. Mother Teresa School, Russell

Overview

Worry Free Landscapes is committed to enhancing outdoor spaces while giving back to the community. In the spring of 2024, our team took on a meaningful pro bono project: designing and installing a butterfly and native plant garden at St. Mother Teresa School in Russell. This initiative aimed to provide students with an interactive learning space while supporting local biodiversity.

The Challenge

The school wanted to transform an underutilized green space into a vibrant, sustainable garden that would:

  • Attract pollinators like butterflies and bees
  • Serve as an outdoor educational area for students
  • Require minimal long-term maintenance
  • Enhance the overall aesthetic of the school grounds

However, the project needed to be completed within a limited timeframe and with a focus on native plant species suited to the local environment.

Our Approach

1. Collaborative Planning & Design

Our team worked closely with school administrators and teachers to develop a garden layout that balanced aesthetics with ecological function. We selected a variety of native plants that would thrive in the local climate and provide essential food sources for pollinators.

2. Site Preparation & Installation

  • Cleared the designated space and prepped the planting beds
  • Planted a diverse mix of native perennials, grasses, and sedges that could thrive in existing conditions
  • Installed pathways and seating areas to encourage student engagement
  • Incorporated educational signage explaining the importance of pollinators

3. Student Involvement & Long-Term Care

To foster a sense of ownership, we involved students and staff in portions of the planting process, turning the installation into a hands-on learning experience.

Beyond serving as an outdoor classroom, the garden will be maintained by students, giving them hands-on experience in plant care, sustainability, and ecosystem stewardship. This encourages responsibility and a deeper connection to nature.

The Impact

  • The garden has become a thriving habitat for butterflies, bees, and birds.
  • Students now have an outdoor space for science lessons, observation, and relaxation.
  • The school community is more aware of the importance of native plants and pollinator conservation.

Conclusion

This project exemplifies Worry Free Landscapes’ dedication to sustainability and community service. By transforming a simple schoolyard into a flourishing ecosystem, we’ve created a lasting impact that benefits both nature and education.
